Han Solo was one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise! This movie is about the much anticipated adventures of a young Han Solo (many years before he joins the rebellion). This movie describes Han Solo's first major adventures including how he meets Chewbacca! He also meets Lando Calrissian, his future friend in Return of the Jedi. The cast includes: Alden Ehrenreich playing Han Solo, Emilia Clarke playing Qi'Ra, Donald Glover playing Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson playing Tobias Beckett, Paul Bettany playing Dryden Vos, Thandie Newton playing Val and Jon Favreau playing Rio Durant.
Great beginning text "It is a lawless time...". From the outset I noticed that the new Solo has some mannerisms of the original Solo. He's voice is very similar. This to me was great news. Alden Ehrenreich must have worked hard on these small nuances.
In the opening sequence he gets taken to a street Queen that he owes money to. He escapes on a hover craft. We see elements of Solo's typical humour in times of stress early on. Great action sequence with the hover craft, the run down port landscape was also cool. He arrives with Qi'ra to the Port.
Qi'ra doesn't make it through after a bribe goes wrong. Solo is angry and sad at this but to escape the law he applies to be a pilot of the Empire. His name is Han but they tack on "Solo" because he has no tribal last name hehehe. Hence the name Han Solo. This scene is memorable. Solo is gutsy and determined "Im a driver, a flyer, a great pilot".
As a soldier he meets other soldiers that are thieves, he wants to join them. They dont like him so they feed him to a beast. It's Chewbacca! But Solo can communicate with Chewy (who is a Wookie). These scenes are a brilliant back story about how Solo met Chewy. They run to a leaving spaceship and the thieves let them in. Solo has a shower and Chewbacca is in the shower with him, Solo says "You couldn't have done this one at a time?" hahaha. I really loved all the supporting characters in this movie, they all had so much personality.
He joins the thieves and tries to steal cargo off a train. Pirates attack on sky bikes. The train looks futuristic and awesome, it can travel upside down too! They lose the cargo but escape the pirates. They are now in debt to Dryden. They go Dryden's lair. There is a singer there singing with an Alien creature hehehe its awkward funny (reminiscent of the Bar Band in the original Star Wars A New Hope).
Qi'Ra is there. Qi'Ra knows Beckett (Woody Harrelson). Solo and Beckett talk to Dryden and make a deal under duress, it's funny. They need a ship, Qi'Ra knows a pilot (Lando). Lando is in for 25%. They need to go to the Mines of Kessell to retrieve some energy flasks for Dryden. Lando takes them to the Millenium Falcon. Lando says about the deal "I don't like it, I don't accept it, but I'll agree to it". The character of Lando is funnier than I expected.
When Solo starts up the Millenium Falcon it's awesome!!! Han makes a move on Kira. They pretend to be politicians, Han and Chewy are pretend slaves. They get taken in. They help free the slaves as a distraction. Chewbacca's fighting tactics are magnificent, he throws people!
As they escape Solo finds out that Chewbacca's age and that he knows how to be a pilot. "190 years old? you look great" Solo says to Chewy! The scenes in the space storm are awesome. There is a gigantic space Octopus creature with huge tentacles going after them too. When they return to Dryden's planet they confront the Pirates again and things get complex.
"Without going further into the plot I must say there is a lot of double crossing going on in this movie. This is what makes this movie interesting. Of course the character of Solo is a product of this type of volatile environment"
By the end of the film we realise why Solo is slightly negative/pessimistic and has a sarcastic sense of humour even when times get tough! "Don't hold your breath kid" he says to a child warrior when asked if he'll ever join the rebellion. Seeing Han Solo in the cockpit of the Millenium Falcon again made the audience cheer!
What an awesome performance by Alden Ehrenreich! The mannerisms of the original Solo, the style and the humour were all there. Of the supporting cast Woody Harrelson as Beckett stole the show. He becomes like a mentor to Solo. Emilia Clarke as Qi'Ra can definitely hold her own in an action film. This is evident when you see her in a fighting/martial arts sequence. Chewbacca has plenty of personality too! The fact that he his Solo's wing man says a lot about Solo. What a thrilling and entertaining 2hrs 15min!
