Steve Butler (Matt Damon) is a skilled salesman for Global Crosspower Solutions, an energy company that uses hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) to extract natural gas. Steve and his colleague Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand) arrive in a small, economically depressed farming town in Pennsylvania with the goal of convincing residents to sign lucrative drilling rights agreements. At first, the deal seems uncomplicated—locals are tempted by the promise of money in hard times. But resistance soon emerges from respected community members. A retired engineer-turned teacher, Frank Yates, raises concerns about the environmental risks of drilling, and a grassroots activist, Dustin Noble, appears to rally townspeople against the corporate offer. Meanwhile, Steve develops a personal connection with a local schoolteacher, Alice, which further complicates his outlook. As the campaign intensifies, Steve is forced to confront not only the ethical implications of his job but also the integrity of the opposing movement—leading to unexpected revelations about motivations on both sides.
