The movie follows several outsiders in the finance world who independently realize that the U.S. housing market is built on a ticking time bomb. Banks are handing out risky home loans (subprime mortgages), packaging them into complex financial products, and selling them as “safe” investments. A few sharp-eyed investors spot the fraud early and decide to bet against the housing market—a move known as “shorting” it. Key storylines include: Michael Burry (Christian Bale): a socially awkward hedge fund manager who discovers the math doesn’t add up, Mark Baum (Steve Carell): a cynical trader who digs into Wall Street corruption. Two young investors guided by a washed-up banker (Ryan Gosling) who exposes how broken the system really is. As they wait for the inevitable collapse, they face skepticism, resistance from banks, and the disturbing realization that their profit will come from a massive economic disaster hurting millions of people.
