Review

If you like the Ocean's 11 franchise and Sandra Bullock, your going to love this movie! Debbie Ocean (played by Sandra Bullock), fresh out of prison, gathers a crew from all walks of life and plans a huge heist at New York City's yearly Met Gala. It appears she is after a very expensive necklace from a New York Socialite. What a stellar cast: Cate Blanchett plays Lou (Debbie's right hand woman), Anne Hathaway as Daphne Kruger, rihanna as Nine Ball, Mindy Kaling as Amita, Sarah Paulson as Tammy, awkwafina as Constance, Helena Bonham carter as Rose Weil, Richard Armitage as Claude Becker, James Corden as John Frazier, Dakota Fanning as Penelope Stern and Carl Reiner as Saul Bloom.

The movie starts with Debbie Ocean in jail in orange overalls. She looks good. She says her husband was a criminal. She says she wants the simple life. They release her and she leaves the jail in heels, she's beautiful. From the beginning I notice the absolutely great soundtrack (similar to the Ocean's 11 groove).

Once out ofcourse, she pulls some small numbers. She steals cosmetics then she goes to the front desk saying she wants to return them having no receipt. They both decide that she should keep them because she can't return them without a receipt! HAHAHA! Brilliant! She also gets a hotel room for free by saying her flight got cancelled and that she's staying in the same hotel as last time so the airline pays for it hehehe. These two scenes are believable and they make you think that this heist, whatever it is, is also going to be realistic and achievable.

Nice touch with having Lou (the blonde Cate Blanchett) as Debbie's wing girl. It's an homage to Clooney and Pitt. Debbie cuts the button off her ex-husbands shirt aggressively hehe. It appears that things didn't end well between them.

Lou questions why Debbie wants to go through with the heist and asks "Why do you need to do this?". "Because It's what I'm good at" says Debbie after gobbling part of her meal. This breakfast scene is well shot and shows the dynamics of their friendship.

The two go to a fashion designer so she can place an expensive jewel on the neck of a Socialite who is going to appear at the New York Met Gala. They hire a female jeweller (Mindy Kaling as Anita) and a hacker (Rihanna as Nine Ball). Debbie Ocean needs more girls. She visits a house wife (Sarah Paulson as Tammy). She visits a quick card trick player whose also a thief (Akwafina as Constance).

There's a photo of Danny Ocean in her room which makes you think about the original series. The big heist has to do with stealing this necklace from Daphne Kruger whilst avoiding the tight security. Anne Hathaway does an outstanding job as Daphne, she's quirky, funny and not to mention beautiful. The rest of the movie sees the girls draft a plan of attack and each has their part to play. As the plan comes together, the editing in this scenes is cool and reminiscent of the Ocean's 11 movie.

The girls get dressed for the Met Gala, they all look great. They drive in a van that doubles as a takeaway van, it's funny. Lou spikes Daphne's plate from inside the kitchen. Daphne vomites and Constance steals her necklace. They move the necklace to the kitchen. Amita separates the necklace for each of them to wear as separate pieces, it was an ingenious plan. As they walk out you are in awe at how much they are getting away with.

An investigator (James Cordon in fine form as John Frazier) gets called to investigate but the girls have it covered. I won't spoil it but there is one part of the plan that the audience won't see coming!

"What I love about this movie is that the ensemble cast gelled very well and most importantly; the heist was believable. You actually believe that this team could pull off such a plan in real life"
That's rare in these types of movies. For example, The Ocean's 11 movie was kind of far fetched and over the top but enjoyable of course.

Ocean's 8 borrows the best parts of Ocean's 11; the soundtrack, the chemistry between the two leads, the assembling of the team and having a cool likeable villain. Sandra Bullock excelled as Debbie Ocean. She played the role cool and confident, Clooney would have been proud! Helena Bonham Carter was the comedic stand out. The other girls also did outstanding (Rihanna was also funny). What I love about heist movies is all the preparation scenes, the ground work so to speak. That was brilliantly done here. You will be thoroughly entertained for the full 1hr 50min.
